Why Assignment-Connected Mastery Learning?

A rationale for community-college administrators, English and mathematics faculty, and corequisite program directors.

Two questions

A different starting point for corequisite support.

Conventional corequisite support asks

“What supplemental instruction does this student need to succeed in college mathematics or composition?”

BeastScholar asks the more immediate question

“What particular difficulty is preventing this student from succeeding on the assignment in front of them, and how can we help the student master that difficulty?”

Both questions are worth asking. The first shapes a course; the second shapes the next hour of a student’s work. By anchoring support to the assignment already on the table, practice arrives when its relevance is obvious, and the student can see why a particular skill matters.

Positioning

BeastScholar: Corequisite Learning That Connects Directly to College Coursework.

Students confront the writing and mathematics challenges they actually encounter in their college courses, practice the underlying skills through interactive Beast challenges, and build a measurable record of mastery.

Faculty remain in control of assignments, instruction, assessment, and student progress. The platform supports their judgment; it does not grade essays, replace feedback, or decide on its own that a student has mastered a skill.

The cycle

From assignment to demonstrated mastery.

  1. Step 1

    The instructor sets the target

Faculty supply an assignment and rubric, or identify the mathematics skills a unit depends on.

  2. Step 2

The student works on the real task

Practice begins with authentic course work, not a detached placement exercise.

  3. Step 3

    Skill gaps are diagnosed

The specific difficulties standing between the student and the assignment are identified.

  4. Step 4

    Focused Beast challenges

Each difficulty is personified as a Beast, with short, targeted practice on that one skill.

  5. Step 5

    Independent demonstration

The student shows mastery on fresh items without hints, so practice is separate from proof.

  6. Step 6

    A visible record

Progress is recorded in the mastery console and is visible to authorized instructors.

Beyond correction

Transferable skill, not a single fixed answer.

Automated correction can repair one sentence or one solution while leaving the underlying habit untouched. The next essay brings the same comma splice; the next problem, the same distribution error.

The aim here is different: name the recurring difficulty, practice it deliberately, and confirm independent command of it, so the skill travels to the next assignment and the next course.

Two tracks

LinguaBeasts and MathBeasts.

LinguaBeasts

For composition and writing-intensive courses: grammar, punctuation, spelling, reasoning, research, argumentation, and AI literacy, organized into Beast families that map to the difficulties instructors see in student drafts and rubrics.

MathBeasts

For gateway mathematics: foundational skills such as fractions, signs, and order of operations, with support paths aligned to Statistics, Quantitative Reasoning, and College Algebra.

Institutional fit

Flexible enough for how your college is organized.

The approach can support a separate corequisite support class, instruction embedded in the gateway course itself, or a hybrid arrangement. Each college decides how assignments, sections, and faculty roles fit together.

A note on claims: BeastScholar is in active development. Features described here reflect the intended design and are best evaluated in a pilot with your own faculty and students. We do not claim proven outcome gains, and capabilities are confirmed with each college before any pilot begins.
